WSU Sociology Students at Work for You!

Sociology 433, an undergraduate class at Washington State University, has been researching options and resources for topics that are important to your rural communities as you work to reduce poverty. Topics include: affordable housing, neighborhood safety, youth activities and much, much more.

Neighborhood Watch

Wishram Community had their 1st meeting to set up the N.W. for our community.It was a great turn out there was 23 community residents that attended.
Our guest speakers were:
Craig Juris (Chief Criminal Deputy)
Tim Oneal (Prosecuting Attorney)
They were able to answer our questions and give us advise on how they can help us with our N.W. and they will be meeting with us once a month.

Wishram's 1st Nieghborhood Watch Meeting

Community Council has set a date for our 1st meeting Sept.21,2009 @ 5:00 pm @ school community building.
We as a community need to be involved with whats going on in "Our Town". If we don't "Who" will? If you are tired of the crimes that are happening in our town,then this meeting is for you.
One person can't do it alone,but if we as a community stand together we can make a difference.
Let's "Help" our town residents feel safe as they go to sleep or go out of town leaving them with the feeling of security and comfort of knowing they and their belongings will be safe or when they return home.
Please come and have your views heard or just to get involved.

Turn out for Comm.Council Meeting there was 14 community members attended the meeting.
There was varies topics that was addressed.
We had guest speaker's Bob and Linda Huffman from The Dalles,Or. about Neighborhood Watch. and
Officer Gunnun from Klickitat Police Dept.
They talked about what Neighborhood Watch how we go about getting it started in our town,the do's and don'ts.They are willing to work with us to get our's started.How we can work with the Sherriff's Dept. and become a team work together not against each other.The info.that was giving to us is will worth it.It will be alot of work but in the end it will be worth all the work.
It's time to take "ACTION",take our town back.

Horizons Canning Class





Canning class learned how to make and can jams,jellies,and pie filling.We were able to make Huckleberry,Raspberry jam and jelly and we also made Peach pie filling.
Next canning class is set for September 14th from 2-6 pm.Hope to see you there.

Horizon Meeting

We would like to thank the Wishram Community for attending our meeting on Tuesday18,2009.
There was alot of ideas that was just as important to us and to our community.Everyone that attended had alot of opinions and lots of questions for us,We hope we were able to answer them the best we could.

Northwest Area Foundation

The Northwest Area Foundation is making a visit to the Northwest.We are privileged they are interested in visiting with Klickitat and Skamania Communities.
We will be going to an event in Lyle,WA.on Sept.3rd to greet and meet with NWAF and WSU delegates.
It is important to share with NWAF the benifets of Horizons.

2nd Canning Class

Monday 24th,Our canning class met at the Wishram Community Church.We cannned Carrots and Green beans.
Our next canning class is set for 8-31 @ 2pm.Come to learn how or if you already know how come anyways.
Canning has changed over the years from when our grandma's,mother's and aunt's were canning our foods that were harvested from the fields.
I thought I knew the canning bussiness just because of what I learned while growing up on the farm.
We have others in the class that has been canning for many years that are learning the new techniques to canning the right way.
Canning classes are opened to the community,meeting place is at Wishram Community Church.

Our community garden is comming along very well as you can see.We have been picking veggies and weeding the weeds as we go.
It may be alot of work but it's worth it in the end.

Our Community Garden is in full bloom,we have lots of veggies growing and blooming.We have been planting new and pulling old to plant new just about every week.We are picking veggies every week.Our veggies out of the community garden is being used for many things that benefit our community.
We're enjoying the relaxation,meeting new member's or just talking about our town that we are proud of.Most of all we are having doing what we enjoy doing.
Our Community Garden is located on the height next to thr frontage road along Hwy.14.

Camp Fundraisers

The Wishram Community Church kids are having an Ice Cream Social on June 19, 2009. They will not only be serving icecream, but also pizza. 7:00 p.m. in the Church kitchen. All proceeds will go into the send the kids to camp fund.

There will also be a car wash in the Fadness Realty parking lot in The Dalles, OR, June 20, 2009
Again, all proceeds will go into the send the kids to camp fund.

BOC Meeting

Please attend the BOC Meeting Monday, June 15, 2009. We will be discussing all the activities for the year, past, present and future.

The Community Garden is doing well. Plants are growing and the first harvests are in progress. Come on out and pull a few weeds and take home some radishes and spinach. Or just see what is there.

The train clean up is comming up June 27. We need all the help we can get.

We will be finalizing plans for July 4th as well.

Come on out and participate in the BOC Meeting, Monday, June 15, 2009, 10 a.m. at the "Little House" (school cafeteria).

Awana Derby Cars

February 7 and 14 the kids and their sponsors put together and painted the Derby Cars for Awanas, the race will be February 28, 2009 at the Calvary Baptist Church in The Dalles, beginning at 8 a.m.

Leadership Plenty

Audra Moffett, Charlotte Newton and Rhonda Hargrove have lead 6 (six) sessions of Leadership PHorizons Leadership Meeting 021lenty so far. They have exceeded the halfway point in this training. We are encouraged by the turnout at these Saturday Meetings.

Leadership Plenty is a program dedicated to identifying and equipping the natural leaders Horizons Leadership Meeting 033in our community. It is part of the Horizons program to aleviate poverty in our coHorizons Leadership Meeting 013mmunity. This program has followed behind the Study Circles conducted in November and December. We will be moving into the next phase of the Horizons program at the end of Leadership Plenty. Please watch this blog and the FallBridge News for times, places and updates.

The analog to digital switch


In February the FCC is switching broadcast TV from analog to digital. You don't have to go out and get a new digital TV to keep enjoying your TV, but you will need a converter box. The federal government is offering cupons to assist with the switch. See the following link for details.

Gary's List (similar to Craigs List) for our Community


Gary Oakley has volunteered to host a listing of any bartering opportunities there are in our community. The idea sprung from ideas developed at our Study Circles. We have talented people here in our community and some may have items or goods to trade for services, or other items. Let Gary know if you have anything to add to his list.

Information and Resource Manual







Holly Lay has kindly volunteered to compile an Information and Resource Manual listing such things as Governmental Agencies, which to call for what service, Hospitals, Doctors, Dentists, Optometrist and Ophthalmologists and other medical services, Transportation, DSHS and their many departments, and any other informational need we might encounter. Please contact Holly with any additions or suggestions you may have. The Manual should be published and available soon.

Leadership Plenty Training

Community members Rhonda Hargrove, Charlotte Newton and Audra Moffett will be conducting Leadership Training beginning January 17, 2009 9 a.m. thru most of the day at the Wishram Community Center (school cafeteria). The training is open to any interested community member. Lunch will be served. Comfortable seating will be available.

Rhonda, Charlotte and Audra attended Horizons Training in Leadership Plenty December 4-6 at the Washington State University in Spokane. They are eager to share their training with the community.

At this first meeting they will share what Horizons is all about, what we hope to accomplish and how we as a community can become proactive in serving our own needs.

We hope to see many community members there.

Community Garden


We have a garden spot located at 1970 Highway 14 Frontage. Our first meeting of the year will be January 18, 2009 at 2 p.m. The meeting will begin at the garden spot and move to the Wishram Community Church kitchen. Anyone interested in participating in the garden should come to this planning meeting. We have discussed setting aside a portion of the garden for children, so if you think your kids would like to be involved, please come.

Wishram Senior Meals


The Meals program is a pilot program to serve one meal per day to housebound and disadvantaged community members, funded by an anonymous donor for 3 months. Started January 24, 2008, we are now serving 11 individuals. If you would like any further information, please call Jeanne Simi at 748-2202. She can also enroll qualifying individuals into the program.

Betterment of the Community Meeting







January 11, 2009 the BOC (Betterment of the Community) met for the first time this year. Those in attendance discussed such things as our next scheduled Community Event. The annual Bake Sale that will be held February 14, 2009 at the Community Center (School Cafeteria) between 9a.m. and 12N.
Other items discussed included the Community Garden, future Community Events and the structure the BOC will form as more members are added.
The Community Garden meeting will be held in the Wisram Community Church kitchen at 2 p.m. January 18, 2009 after coming together at the garden site on Highway 14 frontage road for a quick look around. Be thinking about what you want to plant and garden layout. We welcome your input and would like to invite any interested person to join us.
The next BOC Meeting will be held in the Wishram Community Church kitchen February 8, 2009 at 2 p.m. At that time we will be deciding the specifics of the Bake Sale and discussing future events. Be thinking of activities you would like our community to do in the upcoming year and attend so that your voice can be heard.

Community Action

On December 24 a new Meal on Wheels effort was started. At present 11 people are being served a hot meal every day. Robert Rowan is serving as our chef. More details will be forthcomming as well as pictures.
